LANAKILA IKI CLASSIC RACE Re-cap 2005

Glennis, here's a recap of the race for the newsletter:

Due to weather, we moved the Lanakila Iki Classic of 4/16 inland to Holland
Park in Hollywood.  We had a logistical problem getting all the canoes to the
new location so we ran the three novice teams first, doing a short course of
about 6 miles.   The course is rectangular, and the canoes headed north
into a 20 mph headwind on the first leg.  A couple of the canoes briefly got
tangled up and off course, but recovered.  The west leg is very protected but
narrow, followed by the downwind leg through the lake where everyone got a
good ride.  Kana Lui #1, steered by Ashley Trop was first across the line with
a time of  00:55:03.  2nd place was taken by Kana Lui #2, Adam Uhlan
steering, in 00:58:02.  In third place was Lanakila Iki, steered by Arthur
Cholakis, recruited on the spot due to a steersman no show, with a time of
00:59:05.

The 13-mile Men and Mixed started at about 11:00 a.m.  The first leg of the
course was lengthened to allow for more separation needed for the tight
areas of the course, but all the teams were close for a couple of miles.
Gradually Outrigger Outreach Mix, Kana Lui Mix and Lanakila Men pulled out
in front.  At the first turn Lanakila was in front, hotly pursued by Kana Lui Mix.
Lanakila built a lead of a couple hundred yards on the downwind leg but
saw it slip away on the upwind leg of the second lap.  Kana Lui, sacrificing
distance, swung out to the east side to gain protection from the wind, and it
paid off for them.  When the canoes got close for the west turn  Kana Lui
was within two lengths of us.  In the flat water of the 2nd lap, west leg,
Lanakila held or gained slightly.  In the final downwind surfing run Lanakila
increased their lead and won overall by 32 seconds.  Very exciting.  Long
course results:

Mixed:
1. Kana Lui #1              1:58:14   Steered by Louise Vadala
2. Outrigger Outreach   2:04:34   Steered by John Edwards
3. Lanakila Iki Ringers  2:10:07    Steered by Carleton Kruse

Men:
1. Lanakila Iki             1:57:42    Steered by John Kee
2. Outrigger Outreach 2:01:19    Steered by Mike Sieber

Obviously, I am very impressed with this Kana Lui mixed team.  They won
overall last month in Miami, and almost took overall in this race.   You can tell
this team has great chemistry.

Thanks go to John Edwards for bringing a couple of extra canoes, Arthur
Cholakis for steering TWO races, Andrea Woodburn for keeping times.
Thanks go to Uratua Queniou for donating the Tahitian black pearl for the
raffle, Mary for plants, Carleton for the paddle cover,  Red Bull
for...well...Red Bull.  And thanks to Donna, Vicki, and all the Lanakila Iki
volunteers.

Lanakila Iki had several out of town paddlers, including Carleton Kruse from
Texas, Neicy Nelson from Massachusetts, Amy Arimany from Guatemala.

We had hula dancers, fire dancers, good grinds (pork and chicken) and a
cool raffle.
A first-time paddler won the black pearl.  Hope everyone had as much fun as
I did.

John Kee
